Who was St. Patrick?

17 03 2006

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, and I wonder how many people know why we have this day on our calendar…

Saint Patrick was captured and sold into slavery at 16 years old, and he served 6 years in captivity in Ireland, being a shepherd. During that captivity he turned to God, which changed his life. He escaped slavery, became a priest/monk, then went back to Ireland as a missionary. Over the course of his life he baptized tens of thousands into Christianity and established hundreds of churches through Ireland.

There’s a lot more to his story, which you can find here. I highly recommend reading it, because there’s a lot of amazing and miraculous events in his life, which seem to have largely been forgotten. His story also testifies how someone can have an incredibly difficult life yet be used mightily of God. Who are we to think we can’t make any difference in this world? This was one man who (with God) changed the course of his country and neighboring countries and is still being talked about 1600 years later.
