turning trash into energy

26 05 2006

According to this article on CNN.com, there are companies that are already converting methane produced at landfills into energy — either electricity or natural gas.  The process typically pays for itself after a few years, so then the city is generating revenue from what they were throwing away.  And it’s good for the environment because it reduces greenhouse emissions from the methane produced by our trash.

In 2005, there were 396 operational landfill gas projects in the U.S.  In total, the projects produce the energy equivalent of electricity for 725,000 homes or heat for 1.2 million homes.

It’s nice to see projects like this that are a win-win for everyone.
