quotes about Christmas

20 12 2006

Today I am posting some quotes about Christmas, for your reading pleasure.  A lot can be said about Christmas, and as such these quotations barely scratch the surface.  But perhaps they will lead you to think of some aspects of Christmas in a different way.  We’re often bombarded with images and TV shows of Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, buying lots of presents, etc., but there is much more to Christmas than that.  I’m not implying those other things are necessarily bad, but we should remember the reason for the season.  Let’s put Jesus foremost in our holiday, along with spending time with family and friends.

Oh look, yet another Christmas TV special!  How touching to have the meaning of Christmas brought to us by cola, fast food, and beer…  Who’d have ever guessed that product consumption, popular entertainment, and spirituality would mix so harmoniously? ~ Bill Watterson

There is no ideal Christmas; only the one Christmas you decide to make as a reflection of your values, desires, affections, traditions. ~ Bill McKibben

Let us remember that the Christmas heart is a giving heart, a wide open heart that thinks of others first.  The birth of the baby Jesus stands as the most significant event in all history, because it has meant the pouring into a sick world of the healing medicine of love which has transformed all manner of hearts for almost two thousand years… ~ George Matthew Adams

He who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.

Among the tinsel, trees, and toys
Are many signs of Christmas joys,
But where’s the Christ, whom God sent down,
Who laid aside His throne and crown?

This time of year is more than just a season to be kind.  Christmas is about Jesus, the real reason for the season.

The message of Christmas is not about the proclamation of a holiday or the declaration of a season.  It is about the proclamation of a Person and the declaration of Salvation.  The birth of the child in the manger was an event that prophets had written about, the people of Israel had spoken about, the patriarchs of old had wondered about, and the angels of God shouted about on that glorious night when Christ was born. ~ Roy Lessin
