Independence Day

4 07 2007

Today was the 4th of July, and I participated in the normal celebrations : not working, eating grilled burgers and hot dogs, hanging out with friends, and watching fireworks.  It was a great time.  But I don’t want to forget what the holiday is really supposed to be about.

I’m really thankful for the freedoms we have here in America.  It’s easy to take them for granted.  We usually don’t realize that much of the world doesn’t have the freedom and security we do.  I realize there are plenty of problems here in our country, but it’s still one of the best places on Earth to live.  Most of us live in safety, not afraid of walking down the street, and we can freely speak our mind.  In some countries my blogging would be censored, as well as what I could watch on TV or the Internet.

I hope all of you take a few minutes to thank God for all the freedoms we get to enjoy here.  Even if it’s not the 4th anymore when you read this, you can still take a moment to be thankful.  Let us not miss the true purpose of our Independence Day.  And we should always be thankful, not just once or twice a year.
